Janet Barnes has spent 40 years in the museums and galleries sector with experience in both the public and charity sectors, successfully leading three organisations through major constitutional change. Governance, implementing cultural change within creative organisations and fundraising are areas of particular interest to her.
Janet was Chief Executive of York Museums Trust (YMT) until 2015. YMT is an independent charity set up in 2002 by the City of York Council to manage the York Castle Museum, the Yorkshire Museum, York Art Gallery and the Museum Gardens.
She was Director of the Crafts Council from 1999-2002. Before that she held a variety of curatorial and management roles in Sheffield Galleries and Museums from 1977-1999. From 2004 until 2013 she was the chairman of Arts Council England, Yorkshire and a member of the National Council.
Janet was also a Director of John Ruskin's educational charity The Guild of St George for many years, and is currently a Trustee of Anthony Shaw Collection Trust. She is on the steering group for the Subject Specialist Network for Contemporary Studio Ceramics based at the Centre of Ceramic Art, York Art Gallery. She served as a member of the Challenge Committee for the The Mendoza Review: an independent review of museums undertaken for DCMS which, published in 2017.
